Want to know when ice cream tastes the best? When it’s a reward after a physical activity or a hard-played game. Kids will appreciate it that much more, and you’ll feel great about serving it to them.
You already know the physical benefits kids can enjoy by exercising and staying active—a higher metabolism, more energy, good cardiovascular and skeletal health, and more. But there are emotional and social benefits too. Studies have shown that kids who stay active have higher confidence and better self-esteem, not to mention a better sense of discipline.
It’s recommended that kids exercise from 15 to 40 minutes each day. Activities throughout the day can count as physical activities—but you need to set a good example and help your kids form good habits early. Show them ways to get exercise that fit into your daily routine like bike riding when the weather is nice or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
Here are a few suggestions for keeping your kids active:
• Team sports, including baseball, basketball and soccer
• Letting your kids walk or run short distances (instead of driving them)
• Bike riding
• Swimming
• Yard work and other outside chores
• Walking the dog
Remember to make sure your kids stretch properly beforehand and stay hydrated.
